Part 1 of 3 · Ear health
A few questions about your ears
These are warning signs a doctor should check, based on the FDA's list. Answer for either ear.
Part 1 of 3 · Ear health
Please check in with a doctor
Sudden hearing loss needs prompt care. If yours started in the last two weeks, contact a doctor or urgent care today. Treatment works best when it starts early.

These are reasons to see a doctor, ideally an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist. You can still take the online screening. If you’d like, you can ask to schedule a visit at the end and we’ll go over your answers with you.
If your ear hurts or is draining, you can skip the listening part and answer the questions only.
Part 2 of 3 · Get ready
Put on your headphones
- Put the side marked L on your left ear. Earbuds, including AirPods, have a small L and R on them.
- If you wear hearing aids, take them out for the listening part.
- Turn off the TV and find a quiet spot.
- If your headphones have noise cancelling, turn it on. Turn off transparency mode and any hearing or sound-boost settings, like Headphone Accommodations on iPhone.
- On an iPhone, make sure the silent switch is off.
- On a computer, choose your headphones as the sound output so the test doesn’t play through the speakers. On a Mac: System Settings › Sound › Output. On Windows: click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
Part 2 of 3 · Get ready
Turn your volume all the way up
Turn every volume up to its highest setting, then play the tone:
- Your phone’s or computer’s volume: all the way up, and not muted.
- Your headphones’ own volume, if they have a dial or buttons: all the way up.
- On a computer, your headphones are selected as the sound output.
You should hear a clear, steady beeping. Why all the way up? Every beep in the test is set for full volume, and most are much softer than this one. With the volume lower, you’ll miss beeps you’d normally hear, and your results could look worse than your hearing really is. If this tone is uncomfortably loud, turn it down a step or two. Then don’t change the volume until the test is done.
Check these, then try again.
- Your headphones are connected. For Bluetooth, check your device's Bluetooth settings.
- Your volume is turned all the way up and not muted, on your device and on your headphones.
- On a computer, your headphones are selected as the sound output in your sound settings. After changing it, reload this page.
- On an iPhone, the silent switch on the side is off.
If your headphones are working and you still can’t hear the tone at full volume, that can be a sign of hearing loss. You can answer the questions only, and we’ll note it for our team.
Part 2 of 3 · Get ready
Which side is the beeping on?
This checks that your headphones are on the right way. You'll hear two short rounds.
Part 2 of 3 · Listening test
How the listening test works
- You'll hear three short beeps at a time, in one ear. They pulse on and off, which makes them easier to pick out if you have ringing in your ears.
- Some beeps are very soft, and some rounds are silent on purpose.
- After each round, tap Yes if you heard beeps or No if you didn't. If you're not sure, tap No.
It takes about four minutes. Keep your volume where it is. On a keyboard, you can press Y or N.
Part 2 of 3 · Listening test
Right ear
Get ready…
Only tap Yes when you're sure you heard beeps. Some rounds are silent on purpose.
Part 2 of 3 · Listening test
Right ear done. Now your left ear.
It works the same way. Keep your volume where it is.
The listening part is done. You can turn your volume back down now.
